WALKING TO KANHA TIGER RESERVE

OVERVIEW

This seven day, six night trip takes you over the spectacular scenery of the Maikal Hills, through beautiful Gond and Baiga villages to arrive at Kanha as few do, on foot. The paths are easy and walks are gently paced with plenty of halts. Camp and stay in village homes en route. The final leg of the tour takes you to the renowned Kanha national park for a chance to see the elusive tiger.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Raipur-Bhoramdeo

Arrive at Raipur where you will be met by a member of the Chinkara team and taken to a Raipur hotel for some lunch and a wash. From here you will set off to Bhoramdeo, district Kawardha in the north-western region of Chhattisgarh. The journey takes two and half hours on decent roads.  You will pass some large water bodies with a chance for some bird watching and should begin to see hanuman langurs as you get closer to the hills. Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat is the farmhouse-style home of Kawardha born Satyendra ‘Sunny’ Upadhyay, your host and guide for the next few days.

Spend the rest of the day relaxing at BJR, stretch your legs with an evening stroll in the surrounding villages and take time to wander around 11th century temple complex of Bhoramdeo with its Khajuraho style erotic carvings and little rows of sati stones. Enjoy some traditional Chhattisgarhi food cooked by Sunny’s excellent cook Narayan, and climb into bed ready for a day in which you will explore India as most of her inhabitants do, on foot.


Day 2: Bhoramdeo-Jhalmalla

Bed tea with fruit and biscuits to set you up for your first hour’s walk, into the jungle and up hill where you will stop for a picnic breakfast. From here you walk through the forest to the village of Sunny’s friend Uday, where you’ll meet the car carrying your luggage and eat your lunch on a charpoy in the courtyard of Uday’s house. The car will take you on to your night halt at the home of Dr Rana at Jhalmalla. A lovely man, who is very committed to helping those in need and whose wife Basanti will teach you how to make lahsun chila – pancakes made from garlic greens.


Day 3: Jhalmalla-Lakeside camp

A beautiful walk through the forest before emerging into more cultivated land where you’ll stop for tea and biscuits in a village house. Lunch will be a picnic in the woods and the afternoon’s walk will take you through some beautiful villages where mud houses and blue painted walls dominate. You’ll camp by a lake for your final night. Wonderful birding and a hill to climb with super views if you’re not too exhausted.


Day 4: Lakeside camp- Kanha National Park

The final leg. 15km to Mukki Gate at Kanha National Park. Stopping for tea at Shanti Bagh in Bhairakhar, the home of Margie Watts-Carter, long time resident of Central India, and dear friend of the Chinkara team. From here to Shergarh Tented Camp it is an easy 5km, where you’ll be bed with cool lime sodas and hot showers and can enjoy a few days of jungle in luxury.


Days 5 & 6: Kanha National Park

Along with the jungle safaris at Kanha, with its 200 plus bird species, and tigers, as well as sloth bears, leopards, jungle cats and its famed deer filled meadows, Shergarh offers the chance to explore the local area on foot or by bicycle with its local staff. Try a bike ride to the Banjar river for a swim or a walk to the top of a nearby hill for spectacular views over the surrounding landscape. The beautiful relaxed environment at Shergarh also invites plenty of lazing around on deckchairs on your terrace, soaking up the mingled sounds of village and jungle.


Day 7: Kanha National Park - Raipur/Nagpur

Transfer by car to Raipur or Nagpur for your onward journey.
